Design simple web page layouts

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to scope web page requirements, and to create and implement designs.

It applies to individuals working as web designers and web developers, who apply a wide range of knowledge and skills for basic web development.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Identify main layout sections from design specification

1.1 Identify the required sections of the web page

1.2 Create the web page structure

2. Layout the web page to match design specification

2.1 Position document elements

2.2 Style web page elements to match the design specifications

3. Test and validate the layout

3.1 Test the website in various browsers

3.2 Validate the web pages against industry standards

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

develop a website according to design specifications

lay out page elements

test the web pages in a variety of browsers

validate the web pages, against industry standards.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

summarise standard web and web scripting design principles

define and explain the application of the following for website development:

cascading style sheets (CSS)

the hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP)

a markup language, such as hypertext markup language (HTML), or extensible hypertext markup language (XHTML)

World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards.

Assessment Conditions

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the website technologies field of work, and include access to:

a computer

an aesthetic presentation brief

a variety of browsers

the internet, to validate against the W3C.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Foundation Skills

This section describes language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills incorporated in the performance criteria that are required for competent performance.

Skill

Performance Criteria

Description

Learning

1.1

Identifies and explores, the connections between ideas and methodologies to extend the understanding of requirements

Reading

2.2, 3.2

Recognises and interprets textual information, in order to determine and adhere to, requirements

Writing

1.1

Develops clear and well-organised material for a specific audience, using precise language to convey explicit information, and requirements

Oral Communication

Identifies and acts on issues that contravene the relevant industry standards

Get the work done

1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2

Takes responsibility for planning, sequencing, and prioritising tasks and own workload, for efficiency and effective outcomes

Addresses less predictable problems, and initiates standard procedures in response to these problems, applying problem-solving processes in determining a solution

Uses familiar digital technologies and systems to access information, search and enter data, and code, present information and communicate with others, cognisant of data security and safety
